(ROSEMONT, ILL, June 16, 2005) – Orthopaedic surgeon Lawrence R. Housman, M.D., was recently elected by the Arizona Orthopaedic Society to the Board of Councilors (BOC) of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). BOC members represent orthopaedists in all 50 states, District of Columbia, US Military, Puerto Rico and Canada. Election to the BOC is a tremendous milestone in any orthopaedist’s career.

After earning his medical degree from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, Dr. Housman completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the McGill University in Montreal and fellowship at the Sunnybrook Hospital, University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada. He is currently the President of Tucson Orthopaedic Institute in Tucson. His clinical interests include total joint replacement and sports medicine.

“It is an honor to be elected to AAOS’ Board of Councilors and to serve my colleagues,” said Dr. Housman. “I look forward to working on a number of issues that are important to orthopaedic surgeons, such as access to timely orthopaedic care, medical liability reform and patient safety.”

Active in several professional societies, Dr. Housman serves on the Board of Directors of the Western Orthopaedic Association, the Arizona Orthopaedic Society, Children’s Clinics for Rehabilitative Services – Tucson and is an active member of the Rincon Rotary Club in Tucson.

The Board of Councilors was founded in 1973 by members of AAOS concerned about “the totality of orthopedic life.” The responsibilities of the BOC are to establish and maintain communication with the AAOS’ Board of Directors and members; be a representative, deliberative body in matters of concern to all orthopedic surgeons, including reviewing, debating, and making formal recommendations regarding new AAOS resolution and bylaws proposals; and be an effective and authoritative policy-making body in matters of concern to orthopaedic surgery.

An orthopaedic surgeon is a physician with extensive training in the diagnosis and non-surgical as well as surgical treatment of the musculoskeletal system, including bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.

With 28,000 members, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (www.aaos.org or www.orthoinfo.org) is a not-for-profit organization that provides education programs for orthopaedic surgeons, allied health professionals, and the public. An advocate for improved patient care, the Academy is participating in the Bone and Joint Decade (www.usbjd.org) global initiative in the years 2002-2011 to raise awareness of musculoskeletal health, stimulate research, and improve people’s quality of life. President Bush has declared the years 2002-2011 National Bone and Joint Decade in support of these objectives.
