June 18, 2004

Continuing his commitment to the Tucson community, James H. Levi, M.D. has accepted a position on the board of the Greater Southwest Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. “Every day I see the effects of arthritis on people who are important to me. Patients, friends, family are all impacted. I was excited to have this opportunity to help in the fight against arthritis and to give back to the Tucson community.”

Dr. Levi, an orthopaedic surgeon with Tucson Orthopaedic Institute, notes that most people know someone with arthritis, but may not realize how significant it is to America. The economic impact of Arthritis is huge – 40 million Americans, one in seven people have arthritis. It costs America $54.5 billion in medical care and lost wages and 427 million days per year of restricted activity. It is the #1 cause of chronic disability.

"The Arthritis Foundation is fortunate to have Dr. Levi's enthusiastic leadership. He see and treats arthritis every day, and has a strong personal commitment to community education and improving the quality of life for people with arthritis," said Sandi Moomey of the Arthritis Foundation, Tucson.

The Greater Southwest Chapter serves 1.7 million Arizonans with arthritis, including 4,000 children. Services include funding for research, patient and community programs, public and professional education and advocacy.

Dr. Levi has already jumped in to the fight.
