Robison Elementary Selected for 2008 Playground Project

Robison Elementary School has been selected as the 4th Annual Playground Project recipient.

Robison Elementary, built in 1952, is a TUSD school located at 2745 E. 18th Street.  The school serves 350 children, including three classrooms dedicated to special needs children who cannot participate in a regular classroom learning environment.

Robison was selected as an "Explorer School" for creative ways in which resources are used and obstacles overcome.  It was named one of the top schools in Pima County by March of Dimes Reading Champion program and is a bilingual designated school (bilingual program).

This year’s project will be the Institute’s most ambitious yet, designing and building a fully accessible playground to accommodate the K-2 and special needs children who currently do not have play structures.  The project, with

an estimated cost of over $100,000, will also refurbish the grade 3-5 playground, upgrade the playing fields, provide seating for outdoor classroom activities and plant new trees and landscaping to create shade for the play areas.

The Tucson Orthopaedic Institute’s playground project is part of a national initiative by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons to prevent playground injuries. Playground-related injuries translated into more than $12.1 billion for treatment in doctors’ offices, emergency rooms and clinics in 2004.
