Basal Joint Surgery

Basal Joint Surgery removes and rebuilds the basal joint, joint between the thumb and fingers, caused by pain from arthritis or other factors. A Tucson Orthopaedic Institute Elbow, Hand, & Shoulder surgeon cuts out the lower portion of the thumb metacarpal and also removes the trapezium bone at the base of the thumb. Then a tendon graft, taken from another part of the patient's own wrist or arm, is placed into the joint space to act as a new cushion for the basal joint.
