Growing bones need special care to keep them growing right. Tucson Orthopaedic Institute has a pediatric team ready to respond to broken bones and other typical events of childhood and to more difficult conditions that threaten life and quality of life for children from birth to age 18.
Broken bones in children do pose special risks. Parents and coaches should be aware of hard-to-detect growth plate fractures that can result in disturbed recovery, and that may be permanently damaging. A growth plate fracture can only be detected by x-ray, one reason it is so important to get an injured child to a pediatric orthopaedic surgeon. The Same Day Fracture Clinic at each office is designed to see patients with newly broken bones within a few days after the accident.
The fellowship-trained pediatric team expertly cares for children with less common orthopaedic concerns, including Scoliosis, bone and foot malformations, and soft tissue and bone tumors. They address the concerns of children and their families with sensitivity and compassion, and actively involve families in determining the best treatment options.
