“As an orthopaedic spine surgeon, I often get asked what to do about an aching back. The question is not unlike asking a carpenter what to do for a sagging roof or broken door. To fix the “broken” structure, and try to prevent repeat occurrences, the carpenter first has to find out the cause of the problem, then select the correct tools and materials and possible employ more than one solution to repair the break.
In the case of a ‘broken body’ there is a difference. If you have a hole in the roof and the rain is coming in, you need a carpenter – fast. But if your back hurts, there are a number of things to consider before you see the spine carpenter or orthopaedic surgeon.”
