MEDICAL ASSISTANT (FULL TIME)

Title: Medical Assistant – Full Time
FSLA: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Clinical Office Manager
Mission: To Provide the residents of our communities the highest quality, state-of-the-art and comprehensive Orthopaedic care.

Main Function: Assists in the delivery of primary health care.  As a member of the care team, the Medical Assistant is responsible for working collaboratively with other team members to assure the safe, timely and accurate delivery of patient care.  Maintains all patient confidentiality and HIPAA rules and regulations.  Supports Tucson Orthopaedic Institute’s mission, values, vision, goals and objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs selected medical assistant and administrative duties.
  • Prepares patients for examination and treatment.
  • Takes patient histories and vital signs, documents in EHR.
  • Perform and verify medications (medication reconciliation)
  • Performs suture removal.
  • May remove casts, splints and braces.
  • Fits patients with splints and braces.
  • Prepares injections.
  • Performs dressing changes
  • Prepares exam and treatment rooms with necessary instruments.
  • Assists the physician with minor surgeries, physicals.
  • Accountability to all MIPS scoring requirements
  • Maintains patient files, records and other information.
  • Screens telephone calls for referral to physician.
  • Assists with scheduling of tests and treatments.
  • Make sure MIPS measures are met for each patient
  • Orders and maintains clinical and office supplies and equipment.
  • Compiles and condenses technical and statistical data for reports and records.
  • Obtains insurance authorizations for appropriate procedures.
  • Calls in authorization for prescriptions to pharmacies. 
  • Return all calls to patients 
  • Prepares and maintains supplies and equipment for treatments, including sterilization.
  • May assist within other departments as TOI deems necessary
  • Performs related work as required.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants.
  • Certification from the American Association of Medical Assistants is preferred.
  • High school degree or equivalent.        
  • CPR certified.
  • Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skills necessary to provide care/services to patients.  
  • Must possess the ability to assess data and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to their specific need.
  • Must be able to interact and communicate in English both orally and written with all levels of staff, physicians, patients and families in an effective manner exhibiting tact, enthusiasm and patience.

  • Medical Assistant transfers patient for clinical procedures. Requires vertically transferring patient weighing up to (50 lbs.) from (24”) to (36”), up to (40/shift). 
  • Medical Assistant transfers patient for clinical procedures. Requires vertically transferring patient weighing up to (50 lbs.) from (36”) to (24”), up to (40/shift). 
  • Medical Assistant carries patient charts and x-rays. Requires horizontally transferring charts and x-rays weighing up to (5 lbs.), up to (12/shift), a distance of up to (50 feet) without medical assistance. 
  • Medical Assistant transfers patient wheelchair for clinical procedures. Must horizontally transfer patient wheelchair requiring a force up to (60 lbs.), up to (40/shift), a distance up to (50 feet). 
  • Requires tolerance of standing posture up to (4 hours) continuously, for a total of up to (10 hours) per (12 hours). 
  • Medical Assistant requires (near/far) vision to read patient charts, x-rays, and computer screen; all are in English.
  • Medical Assistant is required to operate computer keyboard, mouse, and monitor for a total of up to (4 hours) per (12 hours).

Working Conditions: Risk of occupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM). Possible risk of physical injury due to moving machinery and supplies.  This is a safety sensitive position.
